TWENTY-SEVEN

Before heading to bed, I set my alarm for 5:30. It felt like forever since I had made time for an early-morning run. No matter what the weather, or how early it was, I never regretted going out.

The next day, it was still dark when I zipped down the elevator and out the front door of the building. I used a headlamp to guide my way the short distance to the end of Lake Street and then down the two flights of wooden stairs to the Esplanade. Locals and tourists alike loved this pedestrian concourse. It was paved, edged with gardens, and ran for several miles along the lake, with a wide strip of golden sand between the lane and the water.

As I jogged east, the sunrise over the lake would be ahead of me and to my right, and on my left were the winding narrow cobblestone streets of Lower Town.

Port Alma was one of the oldest settlements in the country. With an accessible lakefront and the Gull River to the west, it had presented an attractive opportunity to explorers from the 17th century onward. By the 1800s, the towering cliffs above Lower Town had given the settlers a strategic advantage when conflict broke out between our country and our neighbors to the south.

These days, Lower Town had a quaint old-world feel, and the historic buildings housed upscale boutiques, shops that sold sunglasses, swimsuits and T-shirts, a wide variety of popular bistros and cafés, and lots of coveted second-story apartments.

Despite being so busy with two high-profile cases at work, I was loving my run this morning. It felt effortless. Yes, I had a lot on my mind, but no stress was dragging me down.

I found it easy to simply enjoy the cool fresh breeze, the regular cadence of my feet on the road, and the beautiful surroundings. Soon, I was able to switch off my headlamp. Between the antique-style streetlights and the hint of the sunrise at the horizon, I could easily see where I was going.

There were a few other people out at this hour. Most were dog walkers, although I suspected they were folks like me who liked aerobic exercise. Their pets gave them a great excuse to hit the pavement every morning.

I also met several other runners, and we all smiled and said hello.

I stopped by a park bench, did a few stretches, and took a sip from my water bottle. Then carried on. I’d have to watch the time. My shift started at seven, and then I had my big meeting with the inspector and Donovan Hatch at eight. I decided to run past five more benches and then turn back.

I know they say the number three is lucky, but I was going to have to differ. My morning turned to absolute chaos the second I approached the third of five benches. Although it had gone even worse for the guy sitting there.

At first, I assumed I was seeing a man relaxing and enjoying the view out over the lake.
